At the request of a customer, I created this traditional gold engagement ring, named after a small fishing village called Claddagh, near Galway in Ireland, where it was invented. The heart symbolizes love, the hands friendship and the crown loyalty. Jim Morrison offered an engagement ring like this to his partner during a Celtic ceremony.
In the middle of the 19th century, when thousands of Irish emigrated to North America to escape the great famine, many of them took along their Claddagh rings, which often constituted their only fortune. Thus, these rings are still in the possession of many American and Canadian families today. In France, I have recently seen a growing demand for symbolic rings.
There is even a reading code for how the ring is worn.
A single person will carry it on his right hand, with the heart pointed outwards. When she gets into a relationship, she will turn the ring so that the heart points inwards. Engaged, the ring changes hands, the heart turns. And married, you wear the ring on your left hand, with the heart pointing inwards.
According to Irish tradition, the ring is transmitted from mother to eldest daughter.
